U0131 – Lost communication with power steering control module

U0131 – Lost communication with power steering control module

T-Tronic Lab |

U0131 Lost communication with power steering control module – a generic (SAE J2012) network code set when another module stops receiving data from the power steering control module.

Typical symptoms

  • Heavy steering
  • Power steering warning light
  • Assistance cutting in and out

Common causes

  • Supply fuse, relay or earth fault at the power steering control module
  • Corroded or loose connector
  • Damaged CAN network wiring
  • Low battery voltage or a recent voltage drop
  • Internal failure of the power steering control module

Checks before suspecting the module

  1. Check battery voltage and charging
  2. Check the module fuses, supply and earth
  3. Inspect the connector for water and corrosion
  4. Check whether the module answers a scan tool
  5. If several modules are missing, measure the network wiring

If supply, earth and wiring are good and communication is still missing, the power steering control module may be faulty. Further diagnosis is needed before deciding to repair or replace it. See Steering electronics repair.
