How electronic modules are tested on the bench – and what a bench test cannot show

T-Tronic Lab |

Short answer: a bench test powers the module outside the car, checks its supply, communication, inputs and outputs, and compares results with expected behaviour. It confirms most electronic faults, but some faults only appear in the vehicle under heat, vibration or with real sensors.

Steps of a bench test

  1. Intake – photos, job number, visual inspection, water and previous repair traces
  2. Identification – part number, hardware and software versions
  3. Memory backup where the unit allows it
  4. Supply and communication check
  5. Input and output tests, loads applied where relevant
  6. Result recorded: PASS, PARTIAL or FAIL

What the result means

  • PASS – all tested functions worked as expected
  • PARTIAL – some functions worked, some failed or could not be tested
  • FAIL – the fault was confirmed

Limits

Every report states what could not be tested on the bench. Intermittent faults linked to temperature, vibration or vehicle wiring may need further checks in the car.
