Symptoms that point to the engine ECU

No communication Scan tool cannot reach the engine ECU, while other modules answer
No start Engine cranks but does not start, or no crank signal; immobiliser does not release
Warning light with internal codes Engine light on with control module memory, processor or performance codes
Intermittent faults Cut-out, misfire or limp mode that stays after sensors, wiring and fuses have been checked
After jump start or welding Faults that started straight after a voltage spike or a jump start with reversed leads
Water damage ECU mounted low or near the scuttle panel, with signs of water in the connector or housing

Fault codes that point to the ECU itself

These are generic OBD-II codes used by all makes. They suggest an internal ECU fault rather than a sensor or wiring problem. Manufacturer-specific codes differ – send us the full readout with your part number.

P0601 Internal control module memory checksum error
P0602 Control module programming error
P0603 Internal control module keep-alive memory (KAM) error
P0604 Internal control module RAM error
P0605 Internal control module ROM error
P0606 Control module processor fault
P0607 Control module performance
U0100 Lost communication with ECM/PCM (logged in other modules)

Not on the list? Send the part number and hardware number from the label – we confirm before you post anything.

Cloning: your keys keep working

A replacement engine ECU normally will not start the car, because it carries the immobiliser data of the car it came from. Cloning copies the identity and data of your original unit to the replacement, so the car starts with your existing keys and no coding at a dealer is needed. Send both units together – your original and the replacement – and we return the cloned unit with a report.

Before you send the ECU

  1. Note the part number, hardware number and software number from the label – a photo of the label is enough.
  2. Save the full fault code readout, if you can read it.
  3. Start a repair request with your registration and the fault.
  4. Pack the unit as shown in our packing instructions and post it tracked.

How it works

Bench test and written quote: £45 per module. The fee is deducted from the repair if you approve it. If you decline, no fault is found or the unit cannot be repaired, you pay only the test fee and we return the unit with the report – tracked UK return included. See how it works.
